"Hi I'm Paul, one of the founding member of about face theatre, and let me take you on a theatrical journey We find great plays: gripping stories – funny and moving, thrilling and thought-provoking, revealing and inspiring, and something you’ll want to talk about. We promise you a warm welcome, because for us, audience comes first. We’ll take good care of your precious night out from the comfort of your own home.
Each week we'll explore a new 1-2 page scene from a play or screenplay. The basic format of each week's class will be the same to allow for newcomers to engage, while the variety of scenes and exercises will provide growth for ongoing members. Our focus will be on the exploration element of acting, to help people better connect and understand each scene, the characters and the plot.
Explorations will be exercises designed so that everyone watching can try them out in their homes, to better understand and connect with the scene. Each session there will be a mix of exercises where the students interactions are either to Talk, Type, Think or Touch.
- Talk exercises: vocal exploration, such as speaking a character's inner monologue, what you might say in a similar circumstance or trying out an accent (as well as opportunities to unmute and add to the discussion)
- Type exercises: writing exercises, such as noting down key words, a character's objective or drawing the shape of the scene (as well as typing responses in the chat to questions about the scene or inviting suggestions for how it might be played).
- Think exercises: imaginative exploration, including picturing the room the scene takes place in, the character's costume or what the other person in the scene looks like.
- Touch exercises: physical exploration include moving as a character, how they might walk, gesture, handle an object.
Readings of the scene will be opportunities for the braver and more enthusiastic students, two or more at a time, to perform in the front of the class. Except for the final reading of the session, where everyone will read with me.
Our Summer programme will be:
28 June 2021 Private Lives by Noel Coward
5 July 2021 Les Liaisons Dangereux
12 July 2021 The Real Thing by Tom Stoppard
19 July 2021 It's a Wonderful Life
